According to reports, Judith, 84, and Wylie, 86, were traveling from San Francisco to Ashland, Oregon, to attend the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, an event they regularly supported and enjoyed. Concern arose when the couple failed to meet friends as planned. Judith was found in the driver’s seat and Wylie in the passenger seat. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators have stated that foul play is not suspected. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office has indicated that extreme heat may have been a contributing factor, though official causes of death remain pending as postmortem examinations are scheduled. Reports suggest the vehicle’s fan was operating at a high setting, but the air conditioning system was not functioning. Authorities also noted that no water or other liquids were found inside the vehicle.

Friends of the couple have expressed shock and sorrow at the unexpected tragedy. One friend told reporters, “They didn’t crash. They stopped. They both just died there. The entire thing is so bizarre. We’re still in a state of shock.”

Judith Sheldon, born Judith Wyler in Los Angeles in 1942, was deeply connected to the arts throughout her life. As a young girl, she appeared in uncredited roles in two of her father’s celebrated films, The Best Years of Our Lives and Roman Holiday. Later, she served as chairman of the board of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival and was a devoted patron of numerous cultural institutions.

Her father, William Wyler, remains one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed filmmakers, directing classics including Ben-Hur, Roman Holiday, Mrs. Miniver, and The Best Years of Our Lives.

Judith and Wylie Sheldon are remembered not only for their accomplishments but also for their enduring support of the arts, their generosity, and the meaningful lives they shared together.
